Less important reasons for removal of impacted tooth
The first group of reasons indicates the most important reasons for the
wisdom teeth to be removed. The second group of reasons develops an attitude
if the wisdom tooth is having any emergence problems into its expected
position, then the tooth offers less benefits and results in many problems.
The probable problems linked to impacted wisdom teeth are listed as follows.
Cysts and tumors
These are not very common. But cysts and tumors develop in the surrounding
tissues of the impacted wisdom teeth. In case of a decision on not removing
the wisdom teeth that is impacted, the oral surgeon recommends a periodic
check of the tooth. He may ask for an x ray each time and this permits
periodic evaluation of the tooth and its surrounding tissues to keep a
not on the changes that may lead to a cyst or tumor.
Tooth crowding
A theory suggests that an impacted
wisdom tooth in its effort to erupt completely into
its position can pressurize the remaining teeth and cause misalignment
in those teeth leading to crowdedness or shifts. Any later changes in
a person’s lower front teeth alignment is often attributed to the pressure
created by his wisdom tooth eruption. Though there is no scientific proof
for this theory and even not accepted universally by the dental professionals,
the reason can be true. People normally do possess teeth which shift but
this kind of tooth shifting is not proved conclusively by research. The
incidences may be just coincidental. The main argument occurs since studies
have indicated that people who possess no wisdom teeth (wisdom teeth are
missing congenitally) also experience tooth crowding problems.
Damage to the neighboring teeth
Though this is a rare occurrence, the misdirected as well as impacted
wisdom teeth’s attempts in its eruption can result in affecting the person’s
second molar, i.e., the tooth right adjacent to the wisdom tooth. This
incidence is a similar situation of the occurrence of baby teeth. After
these baby teeth falls, they may appear as they did not possess any root
portion. The actuality is that the teeth possessed a root once, but owing
to the erupting action of the permanent tooth, these roots are resorbed
and hence they appear rootless as they fall.
In a similar manner, when the misdirected wisdom teeth try to erupt, they
can lead to resorption of the roots of the second molar teeth. This can
lead to a worst case where both the wisdom as well as the second molar
teeth needs to be extracted. Hence, a dentist cannot conclude regarding
the probable risks of the possession of wisdom teeth by a person in the
initial stages of development of the wisdom tooth.
And some other instances are that the patient just insists that they do
not want to go through the extraction process though the potential problems
are evident and explained to the patient. In such cases, constant periodic
checks through the use of x rays will be recommended by the dentist to
keep an eye on the wisdom teeth.
